So first of all I have to say how much I’m loving this book so far, it is so well-written and you really connect with the characters. Please tell me there are more out there like this one? Because I adore dark fiction. And yes I am reading this book in sections because I have so much to read at the moment! Can’t wait to read chapters 7-12.

I was actually reading this when I was having my hair done the other day (waiting for hair dye is boring, kindles are not) and after explaining how kick-ass kindles are to my hairdresser she asked me what I was reading so you know, middle-aged British lady I didn’t go into detail I just said, “It’s a vampire novel.” Then I got the judgey face and the “Oh I couldn’t read that, I only read nice, happy books.” (Thank God I didn’t go into further detail, hey?! Ha) And do you guys know what? It didn’t bother me. I used to feel self-conscious about what people thought of what I was reading and I don’t now so I can call that a win.

But yes, I need to get a hard copy of Pretty When She Dies one day for my bookshelf. If you haven’t read it yet by the way, UK folk can get the kindle edition for just £2.14 and it is well worth it. Anyway, my answers.

Discussion Questions for Chapters 1-6

1. After reading through Amaliya’s ‘awakening’… So realistic and freaking horrifying right? *shudders* What are your reactions to such a vivid scene?

Oh man, wasn’t it? My first reaction was in fact: Hey wait, this is the opening to my novel but much better written. Damn. Only the crawling out of her grave part. My guy isn’t a vampire and didn’t go on to commit mass murder in a hunger frenzy, she just kinda passes out and ends up in another world. You know, the usual. And by the way, blood orgy?! *shudder* I felt like I should have been more horrified than I in fact was. It was described in such an erotic and sensual way, which totally fits with the terrifying vampire theme. It wasn’t until Amaliya came to and realised what had happened that it got freaky. She’d killed all of those people? OH MY GOD. It’s like you’re actually riding the emotional rollercoaster with her. So good.

2. I know it’s EARLY on, and we’ve only gotten a glimpse of him, but… In YOUR opinion, the man who made Amaliya into a vampire… friend or foe?

You know, when I read this question I figured he’s gotta be a friend, right? But reading him for myself I’m not so sure. The impression I got from him was that he’s a sick freak who gets off on making people into vampires and then treating them as a psychological experiment to see how they’ll react. If I had to pick one or the other, I’d go with foe. He doesn’t seem right at all. Gave me the creeps. But then I had second thoughts when he appeared at the truck stop. He’s still bloody creepy but could he be looking out for her in his own, strange way? We shall see!

3. Amaliya’s family are some PIECES of work aren’t they??? While I HOPE no one has a family as freaking crazy nuts as hers… We all have a few nutjobs in our family tree right? Tell me about a crazy member of YOUR family… Or a time when you thought, “Please, NO… I am SO not with them!”

My family aren’t actually that bad! I’m probably the nutjob, haha. Not to that extent though.. I suppose the most fitting family member for this question would have to be my mum who I do not have a relationship with though we’ve never ‘fallen out’ per sé I just grew tired of her and.. well.. I’d honestly rather not go into it. Kinda personal. I’m not really embarrassed or ashamed of my family though, and I love my dad to bits. Just your regular, run-of-the-mill, take the piss out of each other British family.

But man, aren’t they just horrid? I wanted to hit the lot of them. Poor Amaliya!

4. Pete… Awww, Pete… He confesses his unending love for her, then everything goes to hell in a hand-basket! Who is/was YOUR Pete? Did you have a guy who was hopelessly in love with you for years that you never even knew about?

Pete sounded like my kind of hot. Curly mess of hair, blue eyes, sweet. Mmm.. Such a shame, poor Pete! I don’t know about years, I had more wits about me than that, but sure there were one or two guys with the whole.. okay that was unrequited love. So no I don’t think I’ve ever had a Pete. I’m too good at picking up on how people are feeling for that. And if I did miss somebody, then they have never told me!

5. Have you started connecting with Amaliya? What specific instance stands out the most for you? (hopefully you are LOVING her hardcore by Chapter 6!)

I think I first felt a connection with her when she woke up and the Professor was.. the only way I could think to describe it was mocking her with her own life? There was so much emotion behind her that you couldn’t help but want to punch the guy yourself. She’s a very ‘connectable’ character. And man by the end of chapter 6?! Poor girl needs to catch A BREAK! She is nothing like me, but even so, love her!
